Moreau-Costa-Bertani External Angle: How to perform

Last updated on July 6 2022

Description

The Moreau-Costa-Bertani angles can be used to perform an evaluation of longitudinal arch stability of the foot, on lateral radiographs. It is possible to measure the angulation between several foot structures, evaluate the foot arches and conclude about the occurrence of pes planus or pes cavus in the patient.

The external angle is defined from the lines passing the 5th metatarsal, the calcaneocuboid joint and calcaneal tuberosity on the lateral side.

Measurements

The measurements made by the procedure are displayed in the image:

  • External angle (MCBEA): the angle formed by the following lines:
    • Line formed from the lower point of the 5th Metatarsal to the lower point of the calcaneocuboid joint;
    • Line formed from the lower point of the calcaneocuboid joint to the lower point of the posterior calcaneal tuberosity.
