Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomy: How to perform

Description

A pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) refers to doing a V-shaped resection through the posterior elements, pedicles, and vertebral bodies. The posterior element, pedicle, and vertebral body are resected and closed bone-on-bone from anterior to posterior. Pedicle subtraction osteotomies are most helpful for patients with a substantial sagittal imbalance of >10 to 12 cm and sharp angular lumbar kyphosis. It allows a 20 - 40° correction.


Measurements

  • PSO Correction angle (PSO CA): angle between the superior and inferior edge of the pedicle.
