Smith-Petersen Osteotomy: How to perform

Last updated on April 15 2024

Description

A Smith-Petersen osteotomy (SPO) represents the resection of the posterior column between the facet joints at one or multiple levels to accomplish, in most cases, additional lordosis. SPO shortens the posterior column and lengthens the anterior column. Smith-Petersen osteotomies are most helpful for long-sweeping thoracic kyphotic deformities and mild to moderate sagittal imbalances (6 - 8 cm). It allows a 5 - 15° of correction.
